Traveling to El Salvador is also a culinary journey. Here, the food is generous, delicious, and surprisingly affordable: you can enjoy traditional dishes at a local market for very little money, and the cuisine is fresh and homemade. Get ready to discover why Salvadoran food wins over every traveler.
If you try only one thing in El Salvador, make it a pupusa. This thick corn or rice tortilla is filled with cheese, beans, pork, or loroco, and served with curtido (pickled cabbage) and tomato sauce. Many cost $1 or less. They are eaten at any time of day, but they are especially popular for breakfast and dinner.
Local tip: pupusas are eaten with your hands, and the curtido goes on top. Do not ask for utensils.
Every weekend, the town of Juayúa, along the Ruta de las Flores, hosts a food festival featuring hundreds of dishes. It is the perfect place to sample a little bit of everything in a festive atmosphere and enjoy a great meal for $6–20 USD.
At Travelisimo, we create culinary experiences and coffee tours with local providers so you can eat like a true Salvadoran. Discover our food tours and create your own culinary route through El Salvador.
