El Salvador has a superpower: it is the smallest country in Central America, which means you can see so much in just a few days. With destinations only a few hours apart, you can combine surfing, volcanoes, colonial towns, coffee, and Mayan ruins in a single week. This is our 7-day itinerary for experiencing the best of the country without rushing.
How many days do you need? Five days for the essentials, or seven days for the full circuit at a relaxed pace.
Arrive at San Salvador International Airport and transfer to El Tunco, just over an hour away. Settle in by the ocean, walk through the town, and enjoy your first Pacific sunset with some pupusas.
Take a surf lesson in El Sunzal or relax in El Zonte. In the afternoon, visit the La Libertad Tourist Complex, also known as Sunset Park, to watch the sunset and enjoy fresh seafood.
Wake up early to hike Santa Ana Volcano and see its turquoise crater. Then head down for lunch with a view of Lake Coatepeque and take a swim in its emerald waters.
Explore the colonial towns of Juayúa, Apaneca, and Ataco. Enjoy the food festival on weekends, colorful murals, a coffee tour, and a waterfall hike. Spend the night along the route.
Discover the “Pompeii of the Americas” at Joya de Cerén, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit the Mayan ceremonial center of Tazumal in Chalchuapa. Experience living history just an hour and a half from the capital.
Travel to the country’s most charming colonial town. Explore cobblestone streets, art, Lake Suchitlán, and an evening street-food market. It is the perfect place to slow down and relax.
Explore the renovated Historic Center, visit the viewpoint at El Boquerón Volcano, and shop for local handicrafts before your flight. Until next time, El Salvador.
